Paper umbrellas are made in Thailand, particularly in the area around Chiang Mai. Traditionally Sa paper, made from tree bark is used in the production although other fabrics like cotton and rayon are sometimes added to the process.
The colourful umbrellas in today’s photograph are a combination of Sa paper and cotton. The frames are constructed from bamboo and the handles from pine.
