Buddha Statue Vitarka Mudra

Buddha image in Vitarka Mudra position

Buddha Vitarka Mudra

All statues of the Buddha represent him either sitting, standing or lying. They also usually show the hands in different poses. These combinations of body and hand positions are referred to as Mudras.

I found this very colourful Buddhist shrine set in the outer wall of the Phra Pathom Chedi at Nakhon Pathom in Thailand. In this photograph the Buddha image is depicted in the Vitarka mudra (reasoning and exposition) position. Note how the thumb and forefinger of the right hand are making an “O” sign.

This position is also sometimes interpreted as a sign of peace.

Incidentally the photographs in front of the Buddha of of the current Thai royal family.
