You will find Buddhist cave temples in limestone caverns that are common in some areas of Thailand. Recently I explored Ao Noi Caves which are the home to two large reclining Buddha images as well as several Buddha figures that are smaller and feature the Buddha in the lotus position.
The caves have been made into shrines and there is plenty of evidence of visitors leaving offerings.
This photograph shows a group of Buddha statues that are immediately to the right of a statue of the Buddha in a reclining position. The arrangement suggests that the images in the lotus position are sitting either guarding or listening to the Buddha’s teaching.
There was almost no natural light in these Buddhist cave temples so photography proved a challenge where I had to rely on the flash built into the camera to illuminate the area. Focus lock was also difficult to achieve but this image is just about right given the conditions and it conveys something of the almost surreal atmosphere I found as I explored the area.
