Brown Praying Mantis Thailand

Brown Praying Mantis

The Mantidae more commonly known as the Praying Mantis is part of a large order of insects that are spread out worldwide in both tropical and temperate zones. Here in Thailand I have seen quite a few different sub-species ranging in colour from green to brown.

The example in this photograph is mainly brown in colour, but the body has some subtle shading consisting of small coloured spots. It was about five inches long and was moving around slowly on the brickwork around a garden pond.

Not as well camouflaged as this green Mantis.

Many years ago when my brother was stationed in Cyprus they would use a thread to attach one of these beasties to the end of their beds. This removed the majority of other beasties that passed by!

Oatcake, I too was stationed in Cyprus many moons ago! Can’t remember any Mantises there but it was a great place. Thanks for reminding me.
