Phra Rahu( พระราหู) is a mythical deity worshipped by Thai Buddhists that is said to swallow the sun and moon. Phra Rahu was used in olden times to explain the disappearance of the sun or moon during solar or lunar eclipses.
Statues of the deity often show Phra Rahu holding a golden orb(the sun) to his mouth.
Worshippers seeking the blessing from Phra Rahu to repel bad luck often offer eight black items including black grapes, black chicken, black jelly, black liquor, black rice and black beans.
Today’s photograph was taken at Wat Marathat Worawihan in Phetchaburi. This is a very old wall mural that I found in the temple featuring the deity.
