Yellow-headed Temple Turtle

The Yellow-headed Temple Turtle(Hieremys annandalii) is found in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. It gets its name because the creatures are often found in the grounds(ponds) around Buddhist temples in Thailand.

The turtles in the photograph were spotted at a Buddhist temple where they were being sold to worshippers to satisfy the Thai Buddhist trait of “releasing life.” In which captured birds, fish and reptiles are released as part of the merit making process.

The Yellow-headed Temple Turtle is considered an endangered species.
