Sticky Rice, khao niao in Thai, as the name suggests sticks together when cooked. Sometimes sticky rice is also called glutinous rice because of the glue like properties it possess. The rice is very popular in Laos, North and North East Thailand.
Although many Thais and Laotians eat sticky rice as part of a main meal it is also very popular as a sweet, mixed with coconut milk and served with mango or other fruits. There is also a sweet combining bananas, sticky rice and condensed milk.
Whilst I find most of these deserts sickly I do enjoy Khao lam which is made with sweetened sticky rice cooked in bamboo stems over charcoal. My favourite sticky rice however is the plain variety when served with smoked barbecue chicken and a sweet and sour sauce-yummy.
Thailand rice is world famous with the Jasmine variety probably being the most popular. Sticky Thai rice is however made from a different grain which comes from a group of short grained rice that are also grown in Thailand and Laos.
