OTOP Thailand-Khlong Wan Cake

OTOP Thailand Khlong Wan Cake

One Tambon One Product(OTOP) was a scheme introduced into Thailand by a former Prime Minister to help the rural poor.

The Tambon in Thailand is an administrative unit that would be called a sub-district in English. A Tambon administers a group of villages(Muban). By means of example, I live in a small village called Nong Hin(Muban 2) that comes under the administration of Tambon Khlong Wan.

The original aim of the project as I said above was to help the rural poor by getting them organised at Tambon level. The basic concept is that each area chooses a locally produced product to promote, some examples include jewellery, cotton and silk garments along with pottery and food.

In Khlong Wan the OTOP product is “Klongwan Cake,” a light melt in your mouth sponge that is very pleasant, although no doubt fattening. By the way don’t be confused by the transliteration of Khlong Wan from Thai into English, sometimes you see Khlong Wan and other times its Klong Wan.

The OTOP concept was possibly copied from the Japanese who have a similar project called “one village one product.”

Finally a word about the fish on the cake box, now I reckon it looks like a Killer Whale, while locally the area is famed for its Dolphins. Perhaps they didn’t have a picture of a Dolphin?
