Swastika Symbol-Thai Buddhism Photo/Image

Swastika symbol in front of Buddha Statue Thailand Buddhism

The Swastika symbol had been around for many centuries before it was adopted as the infamous symbol of the Nazi Party in Germany. It is common to see various forms(pointing left or right) in countries where Buddhism and Hinduism are practiced.

Since Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country I often see the symbol at temples I visit. Here its a sign for a good life and luck as opposed to a sign of evil which can be somewhat confusing for the first time visitor to Thailand.

This particular example was photographed at a beautiful modern temple in Samut Sakhon called Wat Lang San Prasit, you can see some other photographs of this temple by following the link.

What is that curling in front of Budda? Snake?

  • The TEFL Don

Hi Rainfield, yes its the Naga, usually in Thailand in the form of a multi-headed cobra!

Heh. That is exactly why I asked how old the temple was the other day! I knew the symbol was very, very old but I wasn't aware of how history might have influenced its continued use.

  • The TEFL Don

Hi Emm, yes new temple but very old symbol. It took me by surprise when I first came here, not knowing about the religious connections.

I have also seen it a lot in India on my travels.

  • Emm

I knew it was an ancient Eastern symbol but I rather ignorantly assumed they would have discontinued using it. In a sense, it is good that the spiritual and religious meaning of the symbol has prevailed.

  • The TEFL Don

Emm yes the symbol is still found in many countries, particularly Thailand and India.
