Thai Temple Fund Raising Poster

It is common to see billboards around Thailand advertising Thai temple(Wat) fund raising events. Whenever something new is planned at the temple perhaps an additional building or shrine then the fund raising committee organises an event. Local traders will set up stalls, food will be on sale and importantly there will be an area where you can go and make donations. Often you get a receipt and your donation is put in a safe but it is also quite common for donations to be on open display.

Sometimes money is placed in the end of a split bamboo stick or placed in plastic envelopes that are strung together and displayed, a bit like decorations.

Every little helps and folk are not expected to make donations beyond their means. So you will see plenty of 20 Baht(40p) notes on display, besides some higher denomination ones.

Toady’s photograph was taken outside Wat Chaloemrat, near Kuiburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan.
