The Stump Tailed Macaque(Macaca arctoides) is found in SE Asia. There is a colony of these primates living on Khao Chong Krajok(Mirror Mountain), a hill at the north end of Prachuap Khiri Khan town in Thailand. While similar in appearance to other Macaques, the Stump Tailed Macaque has a shorter tail and less hairy face than the more common Crab Eating Macaque. The face of more mature monkeys are browner than their primate cousins.
The male and female in this shot show these features quite well(apart from tail). The male nearest the camera has obviously recently been eating as you can see that his cheek pouches(used to store food) are full.
Any species of Macaque can be aggressive to humans and they do carry several, dangerous to man, viruses including a particularly nasty version of herpes. This troop were quite passive and accepted our presence without any hostile displays, although we made sure not to take and food or water with us on the climb up the hill to visit them.
