Greater Coucal Birds of Thailand Photo/Image

A Greater Coucal feeding on the ground in Thailand
The Greater Coucal(Centropos sinensis) is a common bird of Thailand. That said the bird is extremely shy and skulking and is usually only seen on the ground. You can often hear the Coucals call long before you ever see it if indeed you see it at all.

I was lucky with this shot taken over my garden wall in the field behind my home since the bird was preoccupied feeding and didn’t see me.

Equipment: Canon EOS 1000D 55-250mm Lens

Very shy indeed, but what fabulous colors!

I have not had any pictures of birds for a long time. Sort of difficult to meet my lifer.

  • The TEFL Don

Hilda yes he is(its a male), but not my best photograph. Maximum zoom tends to make for relatively poor quality even with 10+ MP!

Rainfield I wonder what your lifer is?

    Hi Mike
One would think that nature would have made this bird grey as it has already given it the shyness.
A fine looking bird anyway, you did well to capture it.

  • The TEFL Don

Martin nature is sometimes funny that way-perhaps because he is brightly coloured hes so secretive.

It took me a few years to get a decent photo of this bird. I heard it and saw it in the distance, but I finally got a good shot!

Jim same here, funnily enough I also got another shot that was half decent a few days after this one was taken.

    BTW welcome to the blog.
