Kapok (Ceiba pentandra) is found in tropical rainforest’s throughout the world. The tree originates from South America and has many uses. The wood has a very straight grain, being pinkish brown in colour and is used by native folk to make dugout canoes because of its buoyancy qualities.
The seed pods shown in the photograph produce a downy white cotton like fibre that is water resistant and used in such things as pillows, mattresses and life preservers. In some areas of the world parts of the tree are used as medicines.
This photograph was taken on a farm near the Thailand Myanmar border at Dan Singkhon.
