River traffic Chao Phraya River Ayutthaya
The inland waterways of Thailand are still used a major transport routes. One such route is the Chao Phraya River which is formed by the confluence of the Ping and Nan rivers at Nakhon Sawan from where it flows south some 370 km to Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand.

Tugs towing long strings of barges are a common sight as seen in this photograph taken from Wat Phanan Choeng at Ayutthaya, Thailand. Occasionally you will also see a converted rice barge passing which now provide a novel way for tourists to see Thailand.

The river is also home to lots of floating plants and has plenty of large fresh water fish which often gather near the temples along the banks because the Thai folk like to feed them after visiting the Wat.
