A water taxi speeds along a Bangkok Klong or canal

The City of Bangkok is only about 2 metres above sea level which can and does lead to flooding. The city is located near the mouth of the Chao Phraya River which flows through its heart into the Gulf of Thailand. Bangkok also has a large amount of canals, Klongs in Thai, which has led to it being referred to as the Venice of the East.

Unfortunately like the real Venice Bangkok is also slowly sinking since it is essentially built on a swamp. Whilst the roads in the city are often grid locked, a great way to get around is by water taxi using the river and klongs to navigate your way to your destination.

Today’s photograph shows a typical water taxi, which is also known as a long tailed boat, so named because the drive shaft extends some distance from the engine into the water and is visible as the boats speed along. The boats are often powered by car engines rather than marine diesels.

    Hi Mike,
A good alternative form of transport but will it be gridlocked here in a few years time? Looks like a great setting for a James Bond stunt!
