The temple of the reclining Buddha, Wat Pho or or Wat Phra Chettuphon Wimon Mangkhlaram, as it is known to Thai people, is in Bangkok and is the home of the largest reclining Buddha in Thailand.
At 46 meters long and 15 meters high this gold plated icon is truly impressive. Mother of pearl is used to emphasis the eyes which look almost human.
The temple is also said to have the largest number of Buddha images(over 1000) in the country, with many being brought from the ancient cities of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.
Wat Pho covers a huge area, about 46 acres and is well worth the nominal entrance fee charged to visitors. Incidentally the temple is split in two by Chetuphon Road. The Northern section houses the reclining Buddha and is probably visited by the most people.
Best viewed in the late afternoon when the tourist hordes have declined, it is cooler and the softer light is good for photography.
