The rice barge was the main means of transport for getting the Thai rice crop to the ports from inland central Thailand until roads and more modern forms of transportation took over. Built from teak the vessels are now mostly converted into small floating hotels that ply their trade on the Chao Phraya River and its tributaries from Bangkok to the ancient city of Ayutthaya.
The rice barge in today’s photograph is the “Thanatharee” which I used to take a cruise from Bangkok to Ayutthaya. Along the way we stopped off at several rural communities and visited a temple to give alms to the monks. The barge is also equipped with cycles which we used to explore the countryside while the crew prepared meals.
Accommodation on converted rice barges is fairly basic, but there is a shared sleeping area that is air conditioned along with shared toilet facilities. When I took the trip I slept on deck enjoying the cool breeze and night sounds of the river. The Thanatharee actually sleeps 12 people but will accommodate a few extra if they are prepared to sleep on deck.
The trip offers a great insight into the life of ordinary Thai folk and as you arrive in Ayutthaya you are rewarded with a riverside view of Wat Chai Wattanaram. A highly recommended way to see Thailand.
