Hill Tribes Northern Thailand-Akha Childrens Dress Photo/Image

Akha Hill Tribe children's dress

There are around eleven different hill tribes to be found in Northern Thailand. One of the tribes, the Akha, are to be found in the mountains around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. They originate from Tibet, are nomadic and can also be found in Myanmar, Laos and China. There are around 50,000 Akha in Thailand.

Each tribe has a different traditional dress and although the girls in today's photograph are not Akha they are wearing Akha style children's clothes. If you visit Northern Thailand chances are you will meet hill tribe people at the local markets where they sell all manner of handicrafts.

About the Photographer

My Photo
Mike Rose
I have lived in Thailand since I retired from teaching in the UK in January 2008. Home is a bungalow about 2km from the Gulf of Thailand and 8km south of the town of Prachuap Khiri Khan. I am one of the few foreigners that live in this area. I am a keen birder and photographer although I have a lot to learn about both subjects! I also enjoy blogging and visiting temples and other cultural and wildlife sites in the country. I am trying to learn the Thai language, but I think you could say that it remains a work in progress.
