Green Jewel Bug-Shield Backed Bug-Family Scutelleridae

Green Jewel Bug shield-backed bug bright green with black spots

The Green Jewel Bug(Scutelleridae Hetroptera) comes from a family of bugs also known as shield-backed bugs because the shield on the back of the bug is not divided.

It gets the common name of Jewel Bug because of the bright colours these bugs display and also because in some parts of the world it is actually used to make costume jewellery.

The bugs feed on plant juices and are closely related to stink bugs. I photographed this specimen on some waste ground near my home in Thailand. Unfortunately I only had my telephoto lens with me at the time, as I was out birding, so it was a bit hit and miss getting the focal length right.

Equipment: Canon EOS 1000D 55-250mm Lens
