The term Golden Triangle is applied to an area of North East Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. At the confluence of the Mekong River and the Ruak River all three countries share a common border. There is a view point in the Thai village of Sop Ruak where this photograph was taken.
Most people associate the Golden Triangle with the Opium trade and while there is little doubt that the trade still flourishes in Myanmar much has been done in Thailand to eliminate the problem. HM the King of Thailand has been at the forefront of a crop substitution scheme for Thai farmers who used to grow the poppies.
The area of the Golden Triangle is very scenic, especially around the Mekong which is usually dark brown in colour due to soil erosion. The border crossing at Mai Sai is not far away and is worth a visit as you can cross the border and shop at the huge markets on the Myanmar side.
