Orchid Chocolate-Oncidium "Sharry Baby"

Orchid Chocolate which smells good enough to eat

Orchid Chocolate is one of my favourite orchids that I have in the garden here in Thailand. This particular Oncidium is named "Sharry Baby." The plant produces quite large spikes of very small flowers which give off the strong fragrance of chocolate, particularly in the evening. The flower colours vary slightly but my orchid produces flowers that are pinkish or even burgundy mixed with white.

Orchid Chocolate is fairly easy to maintain since temperature fluctuation in Thailand is minimal. That said I have a special shaded area to protect my orchids from the extreme heat of the midday sun. The only other thing that needs watching is watering, usually I just use a spray mist to supply all that is needed.

I also use a specialist orchid fertilizer when the plants are ready to flower.

Hi Mike,

This orchid is beautiful. I do understand why it was given its name, because it does look like a piece of chocolate.

Best regards
Asta

Asta I actually think the name comes from the fragrance, but I agree it does look a little like a piece of chocolate.

roentarre I look forward to seeing some more of your photographs.

Mike Rose
I have lived in Thailand since I retired from teaching in the UK in January 2008. Home is a bungalow about 2km from the Gulf of Thailand and 8km south of the town of Prachuap Khiri Khan. I am one of the few foreigners that live in this area. I am a keen birder and photographer although I have a lot to learn about both subjects! I also enjoy blogging and visiting temples and other cultural and wildlife sites in the country. I am trying to learn the Thai language, but I think you could say that it remains a work in progress.
