Chinese Pond Heron- Birds of Thailand

Chinese Pond Heron perching on wall
A Chinese Pond Heron(Aredeola bacchus) is seen here perching on my garden wall in Thailand. The heron is common throughout Thailand and this particular heron visits my garden ponds from time to time, no doubt in search of an easy meal.

The rather nondescript plumage of this bird at rest changes when the bird is in flight since it has striking white wings and tail feathers. The bird is quite noisy if disturbed emitting a loud squawk

The Chinese Pond Heron is normally found in freshwater wetlands, mangroves and swamps up to 800m elevation.
in alarm.

Rainfield, he's actually quite tame. Mind you he eats all the small fry in the pond!

Oh Gosh! That is one handsome bird! Looks most like our green heron. Wow! You can understand how the orientals made such beautiful depictions of birds with these lovely models.
