Monitor Lizard

A Water Monitor Lizard on mud flats

This photograph of a Monitor Lizard was taken was taken by my Thai partner near her family home in Thailand.

The house is quite near a river which at high tide floods the mud flats where the lizard is.monitor Lizards grow quite large in Thailand and will scavenge food from anywhere they can.

Hello Mike, I've seen a couple of posts concerning monitor lizards and I'm a little confused about having never seen one. Are they common place all over Thailand or restricted to certain regions because I sure as hell don't want to come across one. The land at the back of our house floods during the rainy season and gets to within about 100 metres of our back door, do you think the lizards would be back there somewhere or is Isaan country way off their patch. I'm confused but kind of pleased I ain't ever seen one but are they out there watching my every move. I'd appreciate your thoughts on that one. Cute photo but kind of scary.

Martyn as far as I know monitors are found throughout Thailand. However that said I guess it depends on habitat since they are scavengers and like a wet muddy habitat. Whether you would see them in Isaan is another question.

They are actually quite timid but do pack a nasty bit. (non venomous)I watched a wild life programme a couple of nights ago and the guy grabbed one by its tail!

I have also seen them in Malaysia and India.

BTW MTF took the picture using my old camera-she's just getting the hang of it.
