Thai Amulets (3)

My Thai partner is Buddhist. She has quite a large collection of Thai Buddhist amulets. These amulets are worn as part of the faith and for good luck.

Often they are available for sale at temples and are crafted by monks. Some are very valuable and are also highly collectible. This particular one features a previous King of Thailand.

Quite a work of art if hand made by the Monks

Martin. Some are commercially(mass) produced so they tend to be less collectible.

To say that they are “worn as part of the faith” is not quite correct. The wearing of amulets has absolutely nothing to do with Buddhism. The Buddha never suggested that anyone wear amulets -monks don’t even wear them. It is as you say, for luck and also because they believe that the amulets will protect them from various things. In any event, Buddhism is not a “faith” – its more of a philosophy or world view, as they don’t believe in anything – there is no god in Buddhism. The sale of amulets is a very lucrative business in Thailand and many monks (and temples) have become very wealthy through their sale, as have many unscrupulous swindlers who have sold copies of famous and supposedly valuable amulets.
